A boutique stay that allows you to travel back in time

The glitz and glamor of Bangkok’s brand-conscious retail outlets and the modern sophistication of the high-rise metropolis can, at times, become somewhat overwhelming. For residents looking for an in-the-city staycation bolthole or for visitors seeking a slice of Thai history, Baan Dinso Hostel is a real gem of a boutique stay; not so much a hidden oasis as one that is lost in time in the hubbub of the big city.

Nestled in what is originally the heart of the city, the Old Bangkok of Phra Nakhon is bordered by the iconic Chao Phraya River and close to famed Rattanakosin Island. With small streets and old-fashioned shop houses with vintage-style shutters, the whole area has a quaint vibe, yet the incredible temples and Grand Palace add a sense of grandeur and wonderful splendor. In every way, this part of Bangkok stands apart and Baan Dinso Hostel creates its own world of old style nostalgia within this.

Unlike its name implies Baan Dinso Hostel is anything but a hostel and is, in fact, a colonial-style teak house. Built in the early part of the 20thCentury and with 1950s Thai décor and furnishings, it promises a glimpse into Bangkok’s past. Here you catch sight of a city that has long since disappeared.  Wooden floors, a sunny hallway and ornately tiled garden area where breakfast and meals are served, gives Baan Dinso Hostel a homely feel; a breath of fresh air amongst the smoothness of many of the city’s uber-cool hotels.

Close to the heaving backpacker zone of Khao San Road, with its roadside bars, Baan Dinso Hostel reminds tourists, Thais and Bangkok expats of the ‘real’ Thailand and a part of the city they really want to experience; one is true to its interesting heritage and  cultural roots.

Attracting flashpackers rather than the backpackers, is sister hotel Baan Dinso at Rachadamnoen, just a short stroll away. This modern hotel with its clean lines and Thai-Japanese design is modern, bright and airy thanks to its minimalist interior and big floor-to-ceiling windows. Artistic touches and pristine yet comfortable interiors add a contemporary elegance that follows the same gentle restraint as the original Baan Dinso Hostel.

Bangkok is far from being a cookie-cutter capital and oozes originality. However, the city can lunge from basic low-end accommodation to over the top, upscale opulence. When it comes to the under 50 USD range, many stays lack individuality or simply fail to impress. When you come across the charm of an understated hotel oasis right in the city, it is definitely worthy of being cherished and its old world features well and truly praised.
