A weekend with: The Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé

Last weekend, we had the exclusive pleasure of test driving the new Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé that was launched in Malaysia on 19 May 2016. Read on to see how we felt about the newly launched model.

This post: A weekend with: The Mercedes-Benz C 200 Coupé

The long drawn-out dropping line extends further past the rear wheel arch for a seductive play of light and shadow.

In the words of Mark Raine, vice president of sales and marketing for Mercedez-Benz Malaysia, “Sex appeal on four wheels is the new C-Class Coupé.” Its seductive exterior is sporty with sleek lines and edges that results in a look of modern luxury. The striking front with a unique diamond radiator grille leading to distinctive shoulders all the way to the tail end makes it look powerful and definitely captivating. To sum it up in three words — sexy, powerful, captivating.

Interiors and function

Mercedes Benz C 200 Coupe interior
The interior is generous, dynamic and exquisite for ultimate comfort in a sporty car.

The interior is sporty and luxurious with a high-class appeal — even the standard model comes in AMG Line with special bumpers and sills featuring AMG body styling and interior upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather or DINAMICA microfibre in black with contrasting topstitching, a multifunction sports steering wheel with flat bottom and AMG sports pedals. We had a lot of fun flooring the acceleration pedal with comfort as it is joined to the floor instead of being suspended.

Multimedia-wise, the infotainment system is similar to the Mercedes-Benz A 180 which we reviewed here, except for the addition of a touch pad and a Garmin MAP Pilot. Although we’re very happy with the addition of a navigator, we found the touch pad a little tricky to use. To set your destination address, you’re supposed to write the alphabets on the touchpad — which can be a little frustrating if the touch pad fails to register what you’re writing.

Everything else was on point — the interior ambient lighting offered three colour choices (white, yellow, or blue) for a simple personal touch, while the adjustable sporty seats with three memory slots were great, and bending forward the front seats to allow rear passengers in was simple and straightforward. The sound system is satisfyingly good, even without being equipped with the Burmester sound system which is available as standard in the C 250 Coupé and the C 300 Coupé — we’d love to experience that to see how much better it is!

Engine and handling

Mercedes Benz C 200 Coupe handling
A perfect balance of sporty and comfortable.

For this model, Dynamic Select has an additional Sports+ mode besides the other four — Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. The powerful engine is evident from our first two minutes of driving the car, which is about the same time it took us to fall absolutely in love with it. We were also present at the official launch of the new C-Class Coupés where we got to test drive this baby on the newly-tarred Sepang International Circuit’s racetrack to test it’s full speed and handling. Suffice to say the power blew us away.

The standard model comes with Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Attention Assist and Adaptive Brake Assist. Attention Assist comes with adjustable sensitivity, to warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, while Adaptive Brake Assist will boost the brake pressure corresponding with the situation. For instance, if there’s a danger of collision but you don’t seem to be responding, the system is able to autonomously brake at speeds of up to 200km/h. At speeds of up to 50km/h, the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles — something great to have for KL traffic.

Verdict

If you don’t frequently have many friends or family hitching a ride, this is a great choice because the car can only fit a maximum of four persons including the driver (the rear seats are divided by a cup holder so you wouldn’t be able to squeeze three persons there). Boot space-wise, it’s roomier than the A 180, a much welcomed feature, and definitely enough to accommodate your luggage. We’re not sure how to improve the touch pad experience, but we’re fine with using our mobile phones for navigation anyway so that’s not really an issue. The driving and passenger experience is great, a good balance of sportiness and comfort. In short, we want this for ourselves.

Pros

  • Sporty aesthetics make for a very appealing modern look
  • Powerful engine for a pleasurable drive

Cons

  • Limited leg room for back passengers
  • Touchpad is a little tricky to use with regards to registerin handwriting
