Porsche’s next heir to the throne, the 992 was unveiled right at the eve of the LA Auto Show, last night. Stealing the spotlight from the auto show, Porsche’s 8th instalment to the 911 dynasty boasts some serious powerglide potential wrapped up in Porsche’s oddly therapeutic yet elegant design. The new Porsche 911 Carrera S is strictly about evolution, dubbed as the ‘992’ the coupé focuses on tons of tiny upgrades instead of a grand revolution.

Inheriting the turbocharged, flat-six motor from its predecessor, the classic Carrera, the 2019 model cranks out a thumping 444 horsepower which has been increased by 23 compared to the classic.  Geared on an 8-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox which currently runs automatic, yet Porsche guarantees a manual variant, eventually. We believe this model could work both ways, the amount of torque does suggest an automatic, but the smoothness could be better enjoyed on the 3-pedal mechanism. 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster. But if you opt for the Sport Chrono package, you could do it in 3.3. Maybe 3.2, if the track’s in your favour.

A broader nose wraps around 20-inch wheels up front and 21-inchers at the rear. But the improved grip isn’t just mechanical, with a series of new driver assists helping to make the 992 safer. Porsche also debuts a ‘Wet Mode’ for driving on wet streets. The fender includes a water sensor that observes the road and the tyre’s traction. If the sensor detects an excess logging of water, the car notifies the driver and adjusts both the throttle curve and the differential settings to enable better and more reliable handling in low-grip situations. Besides this, the 992 also new camera-based automatic braking system which makes parking and steady cruising much more convenient. If you’re an off-road indulgent, you can get a night-vision cam for dusk drives.

In terms of design, the 992 doesn’t get a complete remodel, just a subtle facelift and a bigger nose compared to the 991. The more stylish and prominent changes can be seen towards the rear end, with seamless rear lights running the entire width of the rear of the car and cool electric door handles that pop out to greet you.

The 2019 Carrera S and 4S should be due between February – April 2019. You’re looking at a starting price of $113,200 for the former, while the later will set you back $120,600. We look forward to counting the many, many 911 variants yet to come.
