The Mid-Autumn Festival is here at last, and that means it’s time to eat mooncakes. However, not everyone loves these traditional treats. For one thing, they’re far from healthy, with each one containing roughly 800 to 1,000 calories. Also, due to the pastry’s popularity, many people experience a sort of mooncake fatigue and end up either getting sick of the taste or simply throwing them out, which is extremely wasteful. And for those who want to give mooncakes as gifts, it can be difficult to obtain a box of Hong Kong’s most popular varieties, or to choose a mooncake that stands out from the rest. Fortunately, there is a mooncake alternative that addresses all of these problems.
While mooncakes traditionally contain rich fillings and yolks from salted duck eggs with thin crusts, Anne Cheung of homegrown patisserie brand Jouer, decided to create something new that merged her experience training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris with her Chinese heritage. The result is a collection of mooncake-flavoured macarons that capture the best of both sweet treats.
Using only the finest ingredients, Cheung and her team spent 12 months refining the recipe, resulting in a series of macarons in four exciting yet traditional Chinese flavours: white lotus, custard, mung bean and wu-ren nuts. The pink-coloured white lotus is the most classic of them all, and has a nostalgic flavour of white lotus paste with a hint of salted egg yolk, while the purple-coloured wu-ren nuts give the most complex texture, and is made from slow-roasted nuts folded into an ultra-smooth base of bitter dark chocolate ganache as well as a touch of Iberico ham for a pleasant savoury aftertaste.
The macarons come packed in an elegant, octagonal wooden box that is wrapped with a red cord that ends in a traditional Chinese red knot. Each box is priced at HK$420 and contains 24 exquisitely made pieces of macarons (six of each flavour), a distinct and unique gift to share with friends and family — or simply enjoy yourself.
