Automative event Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been the perch from which some of the most revered classic and new cars in the world are showcased. We’re talking about an assortment that ranges from Ferraris and Jaguars rarely seen outside of collectors’ garages, to concept cars fresh off the drawing board. This year is no exception.
Held from 15 — 20 August near Monterey, California, the car extravaganza has been a regular fixture in the American state since it’s first iteration in 1950, where only two to three dozen cars were displayed. In keeping with tradition, only the most beautiful and historic cars are to appear on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
It’s one of the most anticipated events of the motoring world for sure and firms have been busy teasing new releases. BMW for instance released a tantalising shot of its latest roadster by way of just a silhouette with few other details. Then there’s Infiniti, which appears to have digressed entirely from its luxury family-friendly aesthetics to come up with a car that looks like it time warped from the ‘40s, albeit with a futuristic electric engine.

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante
A perfect marriage of Aston Martin’s elegance and Zagato’s striking design language, the new Vanquish is beautifully muscular and clearly born out of a racing bloodline. Inside is a glorious naturally-aspirated 6.0-litre V12 engine that muscles 592hp and accelerates to 100kph in just 3.7 seconds, which puts it up there as one of the most thrilling and pretty open-tops around.
No specifications, name, nor poster-worthy images have been released yet, but we’re already excited about this BMW and Toyota collaboration. This is because the partnership will result in the replacement for the Supra and Z4. As seen in the only teaser image provided, the roadster sees a pointed front and an arched back which seems inspired by the newly-announced 8-Series. Keep your eyes peeled for updates.
Infiniti Prototype 9
Being the luxury vehicle division of Nissan, Infiniti is not a brand you’d associate a storied racing heritage with. However, the Japanese marque is about to change your mind with its most brazen stunt yet — the Prototype 9. A curious amalgamation of Infiniti’s current and future design language, the retro 1940s-inspired car packs Nissan’s newest EV technology under the stretched bonnet, sending 148hp and 320Nm of torque to the back wheels via a single-speed transmission. Hand-built by a specialised Takumi team, the concept car is set to hit a top speed of 170kph and accelerate to 100kph in 5.5 seconds.
Jaguar 1954 XK120 SE
To say this car is incredibly special would be an understatement. As the only XK120 to be produced by Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, this car far surpasses the rarity of even the elusive XKSS. First commissioned by petrolhead Max Hoffman, the car was one of many that helped inspire the production and refinement of subsequent models. Classic Motor Cars snapped up the now-neglected beauty in hope of restoring its glorious sweeping lines and iconic grille to the perfection it once was. Its tireless work will finally be revealed at the event.
1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Alloy Berlinetta
Affectionally nicknamed “Maranello’s quintessential gentleman’s racer”, this Tour de France is based on Ferrari’s long-wheelbase 250 GT chassis, styled by Pininfarina, and named so because of its consecutive Tour de France wins between 1956 and 1959. Inside, a 3.0-litre, SOHC V12 engine powers the dynamite with 260hp, mated to a four-speed transmission. Off the track, this car was also known for being extremely easy to drive on the roads.
1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing coupe
Based on the W196 race car and designated SL for Sportlich Leicht (Sport Lightweight), the original Mercedes 300 SL was groundbreaking because it utilised mechanical fuel injection whilst the rest were still using carburettors. Inside, a 3.0-litre straight-six engine might only generate 215hp, but helps push the 1,180kg car to top speed quickly. Its original state and unconventional shade of British Racing Green makes this Gullwing a rare sight.
